21The altar of the Annunciation  The Archangel Gabriel, a messenger of God, greets Mary and announces to her that she will bear a son who will bring people salvation. This picture was painted by Peter Candid (Pieter de Witte) in 1587 as his first work in Munich. In 1697 the altar was re-erected with marble and the stucco of the chapel richly decorated. Around 1800, the figures of Anna and Joachim, according to the legend, the parents of Mary, were added. |
