27The Chapel of the Cross  The exit in the right transept leads to the Ettstraße and from there after a few meters to the Chapel of the Cross. This Chapel was considered as the most sacred room of St. Michael, because it kept - beside other precious relics - a piece of wood from the cross of Christ. The whole room is designed for the veneration of the cross, which is mainly expressed in the altar-painting of Hans von Aachen. The figures on the arch to the sanctuary represent Jesus as „VIR DOLORUM“ – man of sorrows – and his mother Mary as „MATER DOLOROSA“ – mother of sorrows. In the alcoves are the figures of St. Catherine and St. Barbara. |
