7The Sebastian Altar

The spaces between the pillars which support the vault are designed as small chapels, three on each side. At the front side of each chapel is an altar. The paintings above each altar date from the early days of St. Michael. The altar-painting of the chapel on the right middle side depicts St Sebastian. According to the legend, he was a Roman captain of the imperial bodyguard under the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian. For the sake of his faith, he was killed by archers. Alessandro Scalzi painted this picture in 1588/89 based on a draft by Hans van Aachen.
