9The Cosmas and Damian Shrine  The shrine, which is situated in this chapel, contains the relics of the holy doctors Cosmas and Damian. The two brothers treated people and animals free of charge. Around the year 287 they suffered martyrdom. Archbishop Adaldag of Bremen (900-988) brought the relics from Italy to his episcopal city, where this shrine was made around 1400. After the Thirty Years' War Duke and Elector Maximilian purchased it for St.Michael. Right up to the present time, Cosmas and Damian are venerated as patrons of doctors and pharmacists. |
