22The Andreas Altar

Andrew was just like his brother Simon Peter a fisherman on Lake Gennesaret. Fishing equipment that are pictured in the architecture of the altar recall that he was “called” with Peter by Jesus and that he is one of the twelve apostles. According to a legend, he was crucified on an X-shaped cross outside of the Greek city of Patras. „X“ is the first letter of the Greek spelling of Christ; so „X“ is also a symbol of Christ. Andreas is revered as the patron saint of Greece and of the Greek Orthodox Church. The painting above this altar was painted by Christoph Schwarz and Alessandro Scalzi.
